What are Optional Auto Insurance Coverages available in BC?

Collision

Coverage that helps pay for vehicle repairs, towing, and storage as a result of costs associated with an at-fault accident such as hitting another vehicle, object or the surface of the road.

Comprehensive

Pays for damage not related to a collision, such as theft, vandalism, fire, falling or flying objects hitting your windshield or even impact with a domestic or wild animal, lightning, windstorm, and hail.

Loss of Use

Coverage that helps you stay mobile after a claim. While your vehicle’s being fixed, this covers your expenses to rent a vehicle, use taxis and take public transit. It applies from the time of your claim until such a time as your vehicle is repaired, you’re offered a settlement or you reach your limit – whichever comes first.

Specified Perils

Similar to Comprehensive coverage, but at a lower price, specified perils protect you from loss or damage to your vehicle from theft, fire, earthquake or explosion as well as lightning, windstorm, hail, and rising water.

Extended Third-Party Liability

This coverage ensures you are protected against paying for bodily injury and damage costs up to the limit of your insurance policy, should you be found responsible for a crash.  This would also assist if you were held liable for damages, lost income, care expenses and more for both the other driver and their passengers.

Extension Underinsured Motorist Protection

If you’re in an accident where the driver at fault did not have enough insurance, this coverage will help pay for items such as medical costs, rehabilitation, and lost wages.

Check your ability to afford a new vehicle

It’s important to check your financial situation in the event that your car is totaled. How much will you need to pay out of your pocket, and can you afford to do so?

Think about the likelihood of your vehicle being totaled

Typically, a vehicle is considered written-off when it would cost more to repair it than what the vehicle is worth. While you hope it will never happen to you, there may come a day that your vehicle is involved in a collision and is beyond repair. If it were to happen, you should understand the impact it will have on you and your potential insurance payout.

Determine the value of your vehicle after depreciation

Find out the value of your vehicle after depreciation so you have an idea of the difference between how much your primary insurer would pay out and what you would be responsible to pay out of your own pocket.

Understand the cost of New Car Replacement Insurance

The cost of new vehicle replacement insurance varies by insurance company. Our New Car Replacement insurance is priced competitively and gives you affordable coverage. While costs vary, most of our customers pay significantly less than what they would have paid with competing providers, such as ICBC.

Frequently asked Questions

What is Income Replacement benefit offered by ICBC?

The Income Replacement Benefit offered by ICBC is a part of the Enhanced Accident Benefits, designed to assist British Columbians injured in a crash who are unable to work due to their injuries. This benefit replaces the previous system where lower benefits were provided, and the non-responsible party had the option to sue for additional lost wages. Now, with Enhanced Care, individuals receive 90% of their net income as wage loss replacement, up to a maximum of $113,000 in annual gross income, in regular, non-taxable payments. This benefit is available for as long as medically needed and is accessible to those injured in crashes in Canada or the U.S. It's important to note that any income replacement received from other sources like employer benefits or Employment Insurance will be deducted from the ICBC payment. The benefit is intended as a temporary measure to support income loss during recovery, with different provisions for severe injuries and transitioning to retirement benefits at retirement age. For a comprehensive understanding, please refer to the full bulletin provided by ICBC: Income Replacement Benefit Bulletin.
